Announcement of 2nd ENSAF workshop

October 3-5, 2018 - Athens, Greece

Dear Colleagues

This is the formal announcement of the 2nd Workshop of the European Network of Small-scale Accelerator Facilities (ENSAF), a networking activity (Work Package 7) of the European Nuclear Structure and Applications Research 2 (ENSAR 2) Integrating Activity of H2020.

The workshop will be held at the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics (INPP) of the National Center for Scientific Research "Demokritos" (NCSRD) in Athens, Greece, from October 3 to 5, 2018 (Wednesday-Friday). It is the follow-up workshop of the first ENSAF Workshop held in Sevilla, from October 19 to 21, 2016.

ENSAF's primary objective is to strengthen the role of small-scale facilities in the European Research Area by bringing together scientists from many European small-scale accelerator facilities to:

  1. Organise extended databases of resources available at small-scale accelerator facilities, and increase the community awareness of the capabilities of these facilities and identify niches for scientific research.
  2. Develop good practices and exchange know-how related to a) the operation of accelerators and ion sources, b) target preparation and recycling, c) detector and instrumentation maintenance, and d) laboratory management and coordination of users.
  3. Develop and coordinate common scientific efforts with emphasis on projects around the Transnational Access facilities of ENSAR2 and more specifically around the upcoming ESFRI infrastructures.
  4. Elaborate and formulate action plans aiming at effective use of small-scale accelerator facilities for training young scientists.

Part of these topics have been already discussed during the Sevilla meeting (see in: In the upcoming workshop in Athens, the aim will be to

  • Finalise the database on ENSAF resources. This preparatory work is under progress and you may be contacted to provide updates of your lab infrastructure and research programmes.
  • Continue the discussion started in Sevilla, especially on laboratory management and coordination of users.
  • Set up a hands-on training programme aimed at young experimental nuclear physicists that can be carried out in the ENSAF laboratories
  • Discuss the future of Small-scale Accelerator Facilities within the upcoming INFRA-Call of H2020 as part of an Integrating Project that will succeed ENSAR-2 (ENSAR-3?)

ENSAF lab representatives who will attend the workshop will receive financial support for their travel and accommodation.

A circular with detailed information on the workshop programme and logistics will be sent to you in the coming days.

Looking forward to welcome you in Athens,

Sotirios Harissopulos and Joaquin Jose Gomez Camacho, ENSAF Coordinators

Muhsin N. Harakeh, ENSAR-2 Coordinator
